Town Planners Association of Nigeria has concluded plans to investigate embattled former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed over his alleged abuse of Abuja Masterplan and conversion of green areas to residential areas.
The vice President of Town Planners Association of Nigeria, Mr. Lekwa Ezutah, while speaking to journalists at the weekend, said that the umbrella body was going to investigate recent allegations made against the former minister by the chairman of the Senate committee on FCT, Senator Dino Melaye.
Ezutah added that the outcome of the investigation will be forwarded to the federal government for further action adding that he was hopeful that the government will act on the recommendations of the association in order to restore the sanity of the city.
“Dino Melaye’s statement about the bastardization of Abuja Masterplan was not made in error. We are trying to get the details of what happened. We are also going to carry out our investigation. A lot of resources go into the planning of a masterplan. It is not something we should treat likely. It has provisions for review every five years, but there is a procedure.
“We heard the same information. It is one of the issues we looked at in the course of our meeting on Friday. We will have to investigate it and determine if due process was followed, what was the justification? The green areas in Abuja are there for a purpose.
“You do not just come up overnight and convert a green area to a residential area. The first thing we will do if we discover that the former minister abuse the masterplan is to write to the government. We will urge the government to restore it to how it was,” he said.
The chairman, Senate committee on FCT, Dino Melaye, had last week named former minister of FCT, Bala Mohammed and his predecessors as being responsible for the bastardization of Abuja Masterplan, with a firm promise to ensure that wrong allocations made were reversed in the interest of the city.
