Again Senate Suspends Plenary over 2016 Budget

By Augustine Osayande

The Senate on Tuesday suspended plenary sitting for another one week to enable its various committees to complete work on 2016 budget.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly is expected to resume plenary sitting on 23rd of February.

The motion for the suspension of the plenary was moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, and was seconded by the Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The decision of the upper chamber of the National Assembly to suspend plenary followed the outcome of verbal presentation of progress report on the 2016 budget by the Chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje.

Goje said the errors and paddling which characterized the 2016 budget had affected the earlier timetable of the committee.

He added that the Committee on Appropriation has extended the deadline for various sub-committees to submit their report to the Committee on Appropriation to 19th of February because they need more time to check the details of the budget.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in his brief remark said there is need to get rid of all errors in the 2016 budget.

He added that suspension of the plenary will give the various sub-committees one more week to interact with government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
