As a way of checking capital flight and adequately equip the manpower needed for Nigeria’s socio-economic development, former Rector of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, Dr. (Mrs) Philipa Idogho has called on the federal government to focus more on Technical and Vocational Education (TVED).

This according to her will provide the needed manpower in line with the country’s developmental plans.Speaking with journalists in Agenebode, Etsako East local government area on her time as first alumnus and female rector of the school, Idogho advocated that curriculum of schools should be fashioned in line with the country’s development plans so that graduates would be relevant to what the country needs for development rather than importing manpower which she said always lead to capital flight. This he said would also address challenges of unemployment.

“The entire world is moving towards Technical and Vocational Education, which is what we need. We need people with skilled manpower.

“Recently the federal government announced that skills are going to be develop because we import our skills meanwhile we have people we can teach these skills and who already have it. We import skills to do our roads but we have them in the polytechnic sector.

“It only requires us to develop the curriculum to suit what the nation needs at a particular time and redirect our focus to this area and retrain those that have been trained before or start training the ones that we need,” Idogho stated.

Idogho has also advised the government to ensure that only people with requisite knowledge of an educational institution be made head of such institutions.

Idogho who was a product of Auchi polytechnic where she was rector for eight years as the rector said, “I knew the problems and so I did everything I could to ensure that the school is put in a proper footing”.

“Definitely it is good that those that are in a particular system, who knows the system very should be made to head such an institution, except otherwise.

“But it is better for those who are already in the system and who knows what is happening in the system will know what and what is pinching in the system and then be able to focus on those areas.
