The House of Representatives has mandated its Standing Committee on Pensions to investigate the allegations of the non-remittance of pension contributions by organisations to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

The committee will obtain a comprehensive report on the operations of the scheme, including a list of defaulting employers and the amount involved.

The resolution of the House was sequel to a motion entitled “threat to the continuation of the contributory pensions scheme by non – remittance of workers contributions by employers” sponsored by Joseph Edionywele at plenary yesterday.

While moving the motion on the floor of the House, the Law Maker said the scheme appears to be in breach with the Pension Act.

He stated the non-remittance by organisations will not only jeopardise the smooth and successful operation of the scheme but lead to the suffering of Pensioners.

“It is sad to note that 11 years into this, Ministries are not remmitting this fund.

“We should investigate and list the defaulters and sanction them, even the private sector, “Edionwele submitted before the House.

Contributing to the motion, the Deputy Chief Whip, Pally Iriase while expressing his displeasure at the situation said no worse crime can be perpetrated by the non-remittance of monies to senior citizens.

“We need to be very serious on how we treat our senior citizens, “Iriase added.

The House adopted the motion after it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara.
