There is serious tension in Uburu community, the hometown of Governor David Umahi in Ohaozara council area of Ebonyi State at present following the announcement of the coronation of the governor’s elder brother, Chief Lazarus Umahi as the new traditional ruler-elect of the community.
LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that though the emergence of Chief Umahi may have come as a result of village politics, most elders from the community have condemned the emergence of the Ezeogo-elect not because he is from the same family with the Governor but on the ground that the community has already selected and adopted a candidate for the position.
An elder of the community, Chief Aja Onu accused the governor’s elder brother of using his brother’s influence to change the tradition of Uburu community by trying to ascend the throne illegally.
He said since the former Ezeogo of the community died, it was the statutory right of the Umu-Umahi, the head of Umunaga village of Uburu to produce the next Eze, a tradition he said has never changed all through history.
He said the elders had already chosen a young man living in Kogi for the position.
“In Uburu, we have our own tradition and that tradition allows us to live in peace and harmony. Umu-Umahi is the head of Umunaga village which in turn is the head of entire Uburu community; it is the traditionally accepted right of Umu-Umahi to produce the traditional rulers for the community. So when our late Ezeogo died, the elders of Umu-Umahi met and deliberated on how to get another king and they arrived at a certain young man living in Kogi state. Kingship in Uburu is not measured by wealth”
He said the nominee had already been presented to the entire community.
